Locations--what goes into choosing a shoot location?

A few things to think about when planning your session

There are several variables that determine a great photoshoot, such as lighting, composition, clothing, poses, and expression just to name a few. One major component is the location of the session!

What makes a good location? That all depends. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

The Vibe

If you're a senior with an edgy/modern vibe, maybe your location would be an urban/downtown area with lots of lines and architecture. If you want a casual family shoot, with bare feet and neutral colors, the beach would be a great location! Something a little more formal? A curated garden would work great! Want more of a boho vibe? A nature center or grassy field! There are plenty of options---and I am happy to offer suggestions and samples of locations I've photographed.

The Variety

One thing I look for at any location is if there is much variety. I like to find at least 3 specific spots at each location on a regular shoot (for minis, I stick with one). This is what runs through my mind: Are there benches to sit on? Stairs? What do the trees look like? Any trails? If we're in the local gardens, are there also buildings? Fences? Is there enough difference in the landscape within a short walking distance so the photos don't all look the same? How is the light hitting those spots? It's amazing how little you need for great variety--and I'm always looking!

The Venues

While some shoots happen at a client's home or business, others take place at local gardens and parks. Keep in mind that some places charge an entrance fee, may have certain rules (such as no pets allowed), have limited hours, etc. We will discuss any of these details prior to the shoot.
